Campus Notice – August 31, 2014

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Christopher Chamberlin to the position of Dean of Students within the Department of Student Affairs and Community Relations. Dean Chamberlin has worked in higher education for over 16 years and he joined the Cooper Union in October, 2010 working in Residence Life until August, 2013 when Dean Chamberlin became the Acting Associate Dean of Student Affairs. Dean Chamberlin will continue to report to Dean Baker, Vice President for Student Affairs and Community Relations.

As the Dean of Students, Dean Chamberlin will provide leadership and oversight for the Office of Student Affairs including Residence Life, Center for Career Development, Student Activities, Student Code of Conduct / Community Standards, ADA Accommodations, Mental and Physical Health, Immunization Records and other areas related to Student Affairs.

Dean Chamberlin believes that our students need to be viewed holistically and will work to ensure that the students’ voice is heard and that their needs are addressed. Over the past year as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dean Chamberlin has worked to lay the framework to continue to transform Student Affairs into a student-centered office for student advocacy grounded in professional educative processes that will allow our students to continue to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Dean Chamberlin maintains memberships is various higher education professional and scholarly organizations including the Association for the Study of Higher Education, Association for Student Conduct Administration, Association for Institutional Research, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, College Student Educators International, and the American Educational Research Association.

Dean Chamberlin has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling. Dean Chamberlin is also currently entering his third year of study at Columbia University, Teachers College in their Higher and Postsecondary Education program within the Department of Organization and Leadership. Dean Chamberlin is a member of the national research team at Columbia University Teachers College focusing on College Educational Quality.

In May Dean Chamberlin co-presented at the Association for Institutional Research’s Annual Forum; the presentation was entitled “Assessing college educational quality: An inside look at academic rigor, teaching quality and learning objectives”. This November Dean Chamberlin will be part of a team presenting the scholarly paper entitled  “The Power of Measures of Quality in Higher Education: Power for Whom and How?” at the Annual Conference of the Association for Study of Higher Education.
