Alfred Blaustein A’47
Al Blaustein was born in 1924 in New York City. He served in the military during World War II. He graduated from The Cooper Union in 1947.
During the 1950s he traveled overseas. He secured multiple commissions for Life magazine and the British Overseas Food Corporation in East Africa in 1948 and 1949, and a three-year fellowship , 1954-1957, to paint and study in Rome from The American Academy of Rome. He also received grants from the American Academy of Arts and Letters 1958; and the Guggenheim Foundation, 1958.
He had teaching positions at Yale University, 1959-1962; Pratt Institute of Arts, 1959-1970; and Pratt Graphics Center, 1964-1969.
In 1962, he received $3000, first place award from the Society of Graphic Artists for a print titled, The Tangle, in 1962.
Alfred Blaustein received the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. He was awarded the CUAA Augustus Saint-Gauden’s Award in 2005. He was inducted into The Cooper Union Hall of Fame in 2009.
Alfred Blaustein passed away in 2004.
