Alumni Profile: Stanley Lapidus, EE’70

Lapidus-Stanley-1Stanley Lapidus graduated from The Cooper Union in 1970 with a B.E in Electrical Engineering.  In 1995 he founded EXACT Sciences Corporation, an applied genomics company that develops and markets non-invasive, DNA-based methods for early detection of colo-rectal and other common cancers. He served as the CEO from 1995 to invented a screening technique for early detection of colon and uterus cancer. He a life-science entrepreneur and holder of 30 patents. Lapidus founded Cytyc Corporation and was President and CEO from 1987 through 1994. Cytyc was formed for the purpose of creating a better method of reading Pap smear results.  Stanley Lapidus and his team developed a new method that resulted in five patents, and a fourfold increase in test accuracy.  Just five years after its FDA approval, half the women in the United States were using the enhanced test.

He served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at OneLiberty Ventures since 1995. He founded EXACT Sciences Corporation in 1995 and served as its President from 1995 to 2000 and also its Chairman since May 2000.

Mr. Lapidus was a Co-Founder of Helicos BioSciences Corporation and served as its Chief Executive Officer.  Stanley N. Lapidus, co-founded SynapDx Corporation in 2010 and serves as its President and Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Lapidus served as Member of Advisory Board for the Harvard School of Public Health’s Center for Cancer Prevention since 1995.  He served as a Director at Helicos Biosciences Corporation until June 26, 2011. From 2002 to 2012, he served as a Trustee of Cooper Union. He was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

In addition to his entrepreneurial activities, Stanley Lapidus holds academic appointments in the Pathology Department at Tufts University Medical School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management.

Stanley Lapidus received the 1998 Gano Dunn Award and the 2005 President’s Citation.  He was inducted into The Cooper Union Hall of Fame in 2009.
