Arthur Singer Art 1939

Arthur B. Singer received the first Augustus Saint Gaudens Award in 1962.

Arthur B. Singer, Art ’39, was a naturalist and painter whose watercolors of the 50 state birds were featured on a series of US postage stamps during the 1980’s. His son, Alan Singer, painted the 50 state flowers that are on the stamps.

Following graduation from The Cooper Union, Arthur Singer first worked as a printer in an advertising agency. Soon after, he joined the Army, serving during World War II. After the war, he worked as an illustrator and designer in advertising.

Arthur illustrated Golden Guides’ Birds of North America and his book Birds of the World, was translated into eight languages and featured more than 700 bird portraits. In the 1950’s “American Home Magazine” commissioned a series of eight paintings which were included in their magazine with the phrase, “Suitable for Framing.” It is believed that millions of people collected these images. In 1982, the U.S. Postal Service produced Arthur and Alan Singer’s watercolors on postage stamps honoring fifty state birds and flowers. Arthur was a regular contributor to “Audubon Magazine” and received the Audubon Society’s first Hal Borland Award on the bicentennial of John James Audubon’s birth. Arthur’s wife, Edith Goulfine, is also a Cooper Union alumnus.
