Letter from CUAA President

Dear Fellow Alumni:

I invite everyone to our next Council Meeting and Event on January 9, 2018. Dean Mike Essl of the Art School will give an exciting talk about Cooper Union, his lifelong relationship with the school, and provide an opportunity for a lively discussion. See info about Dean Essl here.

With the holiday season comes the opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to the entire Cooper Union community — alumni, students, faculty, and staff. As we approach the New Year, I send a few highlights from 2017 and reminders about upcoming events. The CUAA and The Cooper Union continue to move forward together into a new chapter in the school’s history.CUAA Council Meetings Have a New Format
The CUAA has launched a pilot program where council meetings are now coupled with exciting events celebrating Cooper alumni, students and faculty. We look forward to sharing the evening with Dean Mike Essl and thank DeVonn Francis for teaching, sharing, and feeding us at our previous event.Laura Sparks’ Inauguration Approaches
Laura Sparks is coming up on her first anniversary as the President of Cooper Union and the community is united behind her enthusiastic leadership. Please mark your calendars for her inauguration, which is scheduled for February 6, 2018.

Back to Free, With Your Help
The Free Education Committee will complete its report in January, and finally outline the plan for returning to full tuition scholarships. We anxiously await the findings.

Our fundraising has exceeded goals and expectations this year — we raised nearly $250,000 on Giving Tuesday alone! Thanks to all who donated for your generosity.

Fun and Festivity
Our annual Block Party and Holiday Party were heavily attended and tons of fun — special thanks to a group of almost twenty 2016 engineers for crashing and co-opting our event for their Secret Santa party! This was a welcome surprise.

Please let us know if anyone else wants to get together with their Cooper friends at an event organized by CUAA.

Our newsletters, emails, and social media posts reach a broad range of readers with news about Cooper, its students, and fellow alumni.

CUAA elections will be held in the new year and we encourage you to provide any nominations for council before Dec 30th.

There is much more to say and hopefully much more to come in 2018. I thank you for your involvement, for caring about Cooper Union, and ask you to provide suggestions on how we can do more to give back to our alumni and to engage with you in a meaningful way.

You can always email me directly or the alumni address. Of course, I also ask you to give to Cooper Union, for we need your support on our road back to free and beyond  Every donation— be it $5 or $5,000 — counts and increases alumni participation.

Happy Holidays!!!
