Danish-American Sustainable Design Workshop

CSI competition at CU group photoA Danish-American Sustainable Design Workshop (DasdWkSp) was conducted as a 2 week long workshop running from May 26 through June 5, 2015.  Two days were held at The Cooper Union. A total of 46 students participated.  The workshop was attended by The Cooper Union students along with visiting from the Danish school, Business Academy South West (BASW) and Pratt Institute students. It was a very successful event where Cooper Union alumni  Diana Lewis AR’76, Paul Garrin A’82 and Roxanne Ryce-Paul AR’00 lectured to a mixed crowd of students.

CUAA Council News — CUAA Meetings

The CUAA Council met on  September 16th.  Acting CU President Bill Mea was the guest speaker.   The CUAA Council will conduct a special election for additional Alumni Trustees to serve on the CU B.O.T.  Recommendations for nominees are being accepted now.  The CUAA is also accepting nominations for 2016 Founder’s Day Awards.  Each of the CUAA committee chairs spoke for a few minutes about their committees and then council members were asked to sign up for at least one committee.  The next Council meeting will be November 10, 2015.

Cooper Couple: Andrew Geller, AR’47 and Shirley Geller, A’43

Andrew Geller AR'47 and Shirley Geller A'43Andrew Geller AR’47 and Shirley Geller A’44, met while attending the Cooper Union Art School just before the U.S. entered World War II.

Andrew Geller had a long career as a designer and architect for Raymond Loewy. He is also known for his simultaneously whimsical and ingenious beach homes built on the eastern coastlines of the U.S.

12-2011 newsletter Elanore PettersenEleanore Pettersen AR’41 was a pioneer in the field of architecture. Pettersen apprenticed under legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright until 1943. In 1950, Pettersen became one of the first women licensed as a practicing architect in the state of New Jersey and, in 1952, became the first woman in that state to open her own architectural office.

Engineering Alumni-Student Career Mentoring Program

The Kick-off event for the 2015/2016 Mentoring program was held on Wednesday, September 16th in the Peter Cooper Suite.  The program, now in its second year, includes 60 students and alumni. Approximately 40 of them were in attendance on Wednesday night.  Peter Cafiero, CE’83, was the key note speaker. The program, which is sponsored by the CU Center for Career Development and the Office of Alumni Affairs, matches engineering students with an alumni mentor for a yearlong one-to-one professional mentoring relationship.

 

 

 CUAA@Orientation

On Saturday night, August 29th over 75 newly admitted Cooper Union students joined alumni in in the Great Hall for what the CUAA hopes to become an annual Orientation event, The Peter Cooper Movie Night.

The Financial Services Affinity Group

The Financial Services Affinity Group and law alumni met for happy hour at the Ainsworth Park Restaurant and Bar for the first time in over a year. Co-Chair of the FSAG Group and BoT member, Eric Hirschhorn ME ’83 and Acting President Bill Mea addressed the attendees thanking them for their contributions to the school, and encouraged those in attendance to get involved in the CUAA and nominate themselves or others for the upcoming alumni trustee election. They also mentioned this group comprised the single largest donor group over the past 3 years and thanked them for their continued support. An open bar and light refreshments were enjoyed by the other attendees including Board of Trustee member and FSAG Co-chair Malcolm King EE ’97; the FSAG Steering Committee, CUAA leaders and a diverse group of other alumni. This event was sponsored for the FSAG.

Chicago Regional Event at Elmhurst Art Museum

Chicago Group with Kevin Bone 9-12-15Chicago Alums meet at a CU, CUAA Co-sponsored event, for a private tour of AR Prof Kevin Bone’s Exhibit “Lessons from Modernism” at the Elmhurst Art Museum and curated by Mr. Steven Hillyer AR ’90. The group toured the museum including the exhibit of 25 modern building projects from the 1920’s to 1970.
