Trustee Profile: Robert A. Berhard
Robert Arthur Bernhard is an American banker and was the last Lehman Brothers descendant to serve as partner of Lehman Brothers. He graduated from Williams College in 1951 and the Harvard School of Business in 1953. Bernhard joined Lehman Brothers in 1953 where he held various positions until 1972. He then became a partner at at Salomon Brothers in 1974, and he started his own firm in 1981 called, Bernhard & Associates which merged with Orson Munn & Company in 1991.
Mr. Bernhard has been a trustee of the Robert Lehman Foundation and of numerous community-oriented activities, including The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Montefiore Medical Center, and Lincoln Center Institute.
Robert A. Bernhard was chairman of the board of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art from 1995 to 2004. He helped select George Campbell Jr. as successor to John Jay Iselin as president of the school.
Robert A Bernhard and his wife Joan are members of the Peter Cooper Heritage Society.
Robert A. Bernhard received an Honorary Alumnus of the Year Award from The Cooper Union Alumni Association in 2005.
