Jason Banfelder ChE’93

Jason Banfelder ChE’93 grew up in Queens where both of his parents are teachers.  He attended Hunter College first and then enrolled in the Engineering school at The Cooper Union.  While attending Hunter, Jason spent at an internship in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Mount Sinai, where Dr. Weinstein was the chairman.  He co-authored his first research paper with Dr. Weinstein when he was 18 years old.  At The Cooper Union, Jason was mentored by Irv Brazinsky .  After receiving his BE in 1993, Jason Banfelder went on to receive his ME in Chemical Engineering at Cooper, working with Dr. George Sidebotham, in 1996.

Following graduation, Jason worked at ABB Simcon where he made simulators for chemical plants and refineries. later he started his own company, Kesler Engineering.   He later took a position at Cornell University doing research with Dr. Weinstein in 2003, and in 2009 he received an appointment at Cornell as an Assistant Professor.  At Cornell, he is responsible for the design, implementation, and management of high performance computing, advanced visualization, and software infrastructure for scientific computing applications and programs such as precision medicine, epigenomics, molecular modeling and biological network analysis.

Jason was awarded the Cooper Union President’s Citation at the 2016 Commencement ceremony.  He was inducted into The Cooper Union Hall of Fame in 2016.
