The sculpture created by Meredith Bergmann A’77 honoring the pioneers of the suffragist movement will be unveiled on Wednesday August 26, at 7:45 am in Central Park. To comply with social distancing, the event will be live streamed at the following link: https://monumentalwomen.org/

Meredith Bergmann A’77, received the CUAA Augustus Saint Gaudens Award in 2019.

The sculpture, Women’s Rights Pioneers, depicts Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth, pioneers of the Women’s Rights Movement. The sculpture will be prominently placed in the Literary Walk section of the park, and is the only sculpture in New York City’s Central Park that depicts real women. The only existing sculptures commemorating females, celebrate fictitious females like Alice in Wonderland and Mother Goose. #monumentalwomen

Meredith Bergmann beat out 89 other finalists in a competition held in 2018. You can read about her winning design here. After the design announcement was made in 2018, Meredith worked with the Monumental Women Campaign to modify her original design so that Sojourner Truth was included. Meredith has been designing and creating memorial sculptures for more than 40 years and one of her talents is an ability to work with community groups.
