Isidor B. Laskowitz was born in 1896 and he graduated from The Cooper Union School of Engineering in 1918. He then studied at Columbia University and at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.
He was an engineer and designer who was a pioneer in the field of helicopters and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. In 1925, he founded the Laskowitz Helicopter Company, Inc. He participated in helicopter research at New York University from 1932 to 1933.
Isidor Laskowitz held several patents for helicopter and VTOL components and wrote many articles on helicopters. Laskowitz was a member and fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and, in 1962, established the I. B. Laskowitz Gold Medal Award for Research in Aerospace Engineering Sciences.
Isidor Laskowitz was active in the American Association of Mechanical Engineers, the American Association of Aeronautical Engineers and the American Helicopter Society.
His book, Designs for helicopters was published in 1947. His paper, Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft was published by The New York Academy of Sciences in 1963.
Isidor Laskowitz received the Cooper Union Presidential Citation in 1977.
