Albert Burstein ME’59

Dr. Albert Burstein is a biomechanical engineer with fifty-five years of orthopaedic biomechanics experience.  He was past Director of the Department of Biomechanics at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, and is currently Director Emeritus.  His other positions have included Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and Professor of Surgery in Applied Biomechanics at Cornell Medical School, New York, and Deputy Editor for Research for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

He holds thirty-six U.S. patents (of which 4 are pending) in the fields of orthopaedic implants and materials, and has authored or co-authored over one hundred peer reviewed papers, six books and numerous chapters in the field of orthopaedic biomechanics.

Dr. Burstein is a founding member and past President of the Society for Biomechanics, winner of the Orthopaedic Society Shands Award, recipient of the ASME Lissner Award, the Kappa Delta Award from the AAOS and the Orthopaedic Research Society, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty.  He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Dr. Burstein received the CUAA Gano Dunn award in 1992 and a Cooper Union Presidential Citation in 2006.  He was inducted into the Cooper Union Hall of Fame in 2009.
