Henry Ogden Avery was born in Brooklyn in 1852.   He passed away at the age of 38 in 1890.

Henry Ogden Avery, was appointed the first professor of architecture at Columbia University in 1881.

The Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University was established by Henry Avery’s parents following Henry’s death and it houses Henry’s personal collection of 2,000 books, mostly in architecture, archaeology, and the decorative arts and many of his original drawings,
