Joan Ockman AR’80 is an architectural historian, critic, and educator. She is currently Distinguished Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and Visiting Professor at Cooper Union School of Architecture and Cornell School of Architecture, Art and Planning. She previously served as director of the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University from 1994 to 2008 and as a member of the faculty of Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation for over two decades. She has also held teaching appointments at Harvard, Yale, the Berlage Institute, and the Architectural Association in London. She is a graduate of Harvard University and the Cooper Union School of Architecture. She was married to another Coopr Union Alumnus, Robert Slutzky A’51, who passed away in 2005.
Joan’s writings on modern and contemporary architecture have appeared in numerous anthologies, exhibition catalogues, and journals.
Joan is a recipient of grants and fellowships from the Graham Foundation, the International Center for Advanced Studies at New York University, and the Mellon Humanities, Urbanism, and Design Initiative.
Joan Ockman AR’80 will receive the John Q. Hejduk Award in May 2019 and will be inducted into The Cooper Union Hall of Fame at that time. She was honored as a Fellow, Society of Architectural Historians in 2017. She received this honor for “lifetime of significant contributions to the field of architectural history”
