Letter from the Rock the Vote Chairwoman

kay NordsstromDear Cooper Union Alumni,

As the Chair of the 2015 Cooper Union Alumni Association (CUAA) Election Committee, I’d like to tell you the “Five Things to Really Connect You to Cooper Union.”

#1 Vote in this Election. Help shape the future of our alumni organization. This year the CUAA’s communication with alumni through the Administration’s Office of Alumni Affairs was severed. Thanks to a few dedicated and resourceful Council members, we were able to build a new database, resume communications and launch this election. In the upcoming year, the CUAA will define its relationship with the Administration on this and other important issues. We need everyone’s vote as an example of the strength and commitment of the alumni community.

Note: To vote, you will need the ballot attached to the email from cooperalumni.org sent March 15. If you did not receive this email, or no longer have it, you can register at cooperalumni.org/vote.  You can expect a ballot by email within a week, as this is a manual process.  Ballots must be submitted by April 30, 11:59 PM PST.

#2 Carefully Select the Candidates Who Will Represent You. Learn about the candidates by reading their bios and statements online. Attend the Meet the Candidates Night on Tuesday, April 14 from 6 – 9 at Cooper Union or participate via teleconference [ed. note: watch the livestream from the event, archived here] . Attend Founder’s Day on Sunday, April 26 and chat with candidates. Note the differences in their beliefs and the manner in which they present themselves. Then select those whom you feel will best represent you and the 13,000-member alumni community.

#3 Answer the Referendum Questions. The CUAA wants your opinion on several key issues facing the Council. The ballot contains three referendum questions asking whether you support CUAA’s commitment to return to tuition-free, organization as 501(c)3 non-profit entity and inclusion of alumni-elected Trustees on the Board of Trustees. Your responses will help set the direction for the new Council.

#4 Stay Connected with Fellow Alumni by Participating in CUAA Events. Throughout the year, the CUAA holds professional development, networking and social events to maintain close relationships between alumni and the school. Come to our next big event, the Founder’s Day Block Party at Cooper Square on April 26; meet informally with candidates, visit with old friends, and make new ones.

#5 Support CUAA by Volunteering or by Donating. The CUAA is seeking alumni volunteers to plan and organize new and existing events, or make a donation to CUAA to fund an event. Find out how by emailing contact@cooperalumni.org.

If you really want to connect to Cooper Union, help the CUAA Rock the Vote in 2015.

With my sincere appreciation,

Kay Nordstrom, ME ‘77
