The Cooper Union visits California

During the first week of April 2013, Cooper Union alumni, parents and friends gathered in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Dean Baker and George Ketigan IE’07

A small group of alumni met at George’s on the Cove in La Jolla with Cooper representatives to network and discuss the current state of the school and how best to engage the Southern California area alumni.  Discussion focused largely on the financial state of the school and the group brainstormed ideas of how to keep alumni engaged from a distance.  On Friday, April 4th, the Los Angeles area alumni had a night out at Dodger Stadium hosted by Honorary Alumnus Dean Stephen Baker.

Dean Baker hosted a pre-game reception at the stadium with over 40 alumni, parents and friends and then joined the group as the Dodgers beat the Pirates 3 – 0.  Dean Baker shared an update on the school and the numerous recent athletics successes at Cooper.  While in Los Angeles, Dean Baker, Caitlin Tramel, Director of Alumni Affairs and Jennifer Durst from the Development team had the opportunity to meet with young alumnus George Ketigian, IE ’07, who is an Avionics Engineer at SpaceX. Baker and the group had an in depth tour of the facility on Rocket Road and discussed Ketigian’s work on the successful launches to date as well as upcoming missions.

Dean Baker and Hsu-Wei Shueh, EE ’90

Heading north to to the Bay Area, Dean Baker had the opportunity to polish his skills on the golf course as he played a round with Bay Area alumni leader, Hsu-Wei Shueh, EE ’90.  Dean Baker and Caitlin Tramel met with another successful young alumnus, Armando Atienza, EE ’02, who led a tour of Google’s main campus in Mountain View, CA.  That evening, Baker once again hosted a pre-game reception at Pete’s Tavern and then crossed the street to the new AT&T Park to watch the World Champion San Francisco Giants with nearly 50 alumni and friends.  Dean Baker seems to be a good luck charm as the Giants beat the Rockies 4 – 2.

CU @ SF MOMA – Artist Talk: Thom Mayne on Lebbeus Woods
Thursday | February 21st, 2013 | 6pm

This sold out event was viewed by alumni, spouses, and friends.  Wine, beer, and hot chocolate were rumored to be seen in hands of attendees.  We had a chance to view works by Lebbeus Woods (exhibit showing until June 2, 2013) before, during, and after the talk.

CU @ SAN FRAN MOMA (left to right): John Chih, EE ’90, Min Wei,ME ’00, Hsu-Wei Shueh, EE ’90, and Suzanne Cerny, A ’59

15 Cooper Union alumni from all three schools and their guests came together at the San Francisco MOMA for a special conversation by Thom Mayne and Neil M. Denari on Cooper Union Professor Lebbeus Woods. It was a delightful occasion to celebrate the life and works of Professor Woods.

Elizabeth Feder, AR ’10 says, “Neil Denari’s referral to Leb as the Bête noire and how he tied that into his larger presentation of antagonism in architecture was great” and “Thom Mayne’s deeply personal portrait of Leb’s fearlessness and willingness to place himself in zones of friction – both political and professional – was really illuminating.” Perhaps one of the best surprises of the night was when Alan Zimmerman, A ’01, looked up and saw a work he contributed to about 15 years ago hanging in the entrance hall. It was the United Nations: Babble of the Millennium installation by Gu Wenda (who was a guest professor and visiting artist at Cooper Union).

Other alumni participating in the event include: Suzanne Cerny, A ’59, Cheri Gandy, AR ’96, Bruce Pasternack (Trustee),  ME ’68, John Chih, EE ’90, Min Wei, ME ’00, and Hsu-Wei Shueh, EE ’90. This event is the 11th held by the Bay Area Regional Group in the last 6 years.
