Griffin Reilly (ME’02/MME’03) has been taking Cooper Union senior students on tours of the Con Edison East River Co-generation Power Plant, located on East 14th Street, every year since 2006. He believes a power plant is the ideal place to bring engineering students because all disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical) are needed to power our modern society, and they can see it all under one roof.
The most recent tours were on April 18th, April 25th, and May 2nd of 2014. 31 students and two professors attended in total. The groups were shown the truncated combine cycle gas turbines and heat recovery steam generators, the Rankine cycle high pressure boilers and associated electric generators, the water treatment facilities, and the modern control rooms of the plant. The photos were taken by Jon Huang ChE’14.
