2016 Archtober and Open House NY


Archtober is a month long celebration of Architecture.  Archtober includes tours, lectures, films and exhibitions that focus on the importance of architecture and design in everyday life.  It is organized by the Center for Architecture in collaboration with partnering organizations across the city, the festival raises awareness of the important role of design in our city and the richness of New York’s built environment.  The Cooper Union community is very much a part of the Archtober festivities.

10/4 to 10/22     Nader Tehrani, Dean, Chanin School of Architecture, Daniel Libeskind AR ’70 , Laurie Hawkinson AR ’83, Gina Pollara AR ’91, Bradley Samuels, AR ’05, are part of a group exhibition, Work in Progress, which showcases alternative visions for New York City development projects, as well as a photographic survey of active construction sites throughout the city.    Learn More

Gia-Maineiro-154x154Gia Mainiero, AR ’06 gives a guided tour of this facility located at the corner of Spring Street and West Street, this complex includes three district garages for the NYC Department of Sanitation, accommodating over 150 sanitation vehicles, separate vehicle wash and personnel facilities for each district, and centralized fueling and repair facilities.

10/27/16 to 12/03/16      The thirteenth Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (XIII BEAU)

PC Profile Logo 1950sThis traveling exhibit will be exhibited for the first time in the United States in Cooper Union’s Arthur A. Houghton Jr. Gallery. The exhibition, entitled Alternativas / Alternatives, features 22 jury selected projects completed between January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2015 by contemporary Spanish architects. The installation, which also includes an additional 20 shortlisted works, features large-scale image displays and audiovisual commentary about the winning projects, as well as drawing reproductions and architectural models.  The exhibition is free and open to the public.   Learn More

Open House NY

Open House NY is a weekend event that is organized by   .  It is part of a worldwide movement to engage a broad public in a conversation about architecture, public space, and the future of urban life. This year, it takes place on October 15 and 16.  In some cases, the buildings have been designed or renovated by allumni.  In other cases, alumni are are taking part.

Lee Skolnick AR’ 79 renovated the National Lighthouse Museum, located on the promenade St. George, Staten Island.

Sat & Sun 10/15 & 10/16,   11am-4:30pm. Tours  at 12, 1, 2, 3, 4pm both days. Six historical buildings date back to the time that this site was the
location of the U.S. Lighthouse Service, which manufactured all of the items used by lighthouses around the U.S.
Visitors will see the “Wall of Lights,” with more than 160 Lighthouse Models, and a host of other unique exhibits. 1862-1912;

Meredith bergmann sept11_firemanMeredith Bergmann, A’77, is a sculptor and poet.  See a sculpture by Meredith Bergmann titled, Pinky, at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, 1047 AMSTERDAM AVE, MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, Manhattan.  “Pinky” was an enslaved girl whose freedom was purchased by Reverend Henry Ward Beecher and his congregation.  This piece is a memorial to those who suffered on 9/11.  Pinky’s hands are expressing healing and they are halting two jet airplanes.

Tours led by Fourth Arts Block director Risa Shoup.  Tours visit a mix of cultural organizations located within this “Naturally-Ocurring Cultural District” that borders the Cooper Square.  Affiliated artists from each site will be present to explain the particular history of their site, current programming, and its relationship to the district.
