2017 Archtober
Archtober is a month long celebration of architecture in New York City. Throughout the month there are exhibits and presentations at the Center for Architecture, at museums, and area colleges. The Cooper Union is a sponsor. Several Architecture firms have opened their studios for tours. And there are tours of some amazing buildings. Each day of the month one sight of architectural interest located in the city is showcased in the media.

Creative Scholarship: A NYSID Faculty Exhibition

The exhibit will celebrate the wide-ranging work of its faculty interior design, fine art, architecture, writing, and historical and decorative arts scholarship.

Alex Gil AR’01 proposal for the Diplomat’s Tower is on display during 5×5 Participatory Provocations Exhibit
In 5×5 Participatory Provocations, 25 young architects engage controversial issues in an imagined future, producing physical expressions or provocations. Each team responds to one of five prompts, contemplating the future of drone deliveries, the consequences of luxury high rises as financial investments, luxury tourism on the moon, the fictional development of NSA community branches, and the potential construction of an anti-immigration wall on the border between the US and Mexico.

Studio Libeskind opens its office for a tour of their downtown studio located across the street from the World Trade Center site. Daniel Libeskind AR’70 will welcome guests, followed by an intimate look at the studio’s latest work on the boards presented by the partners. Register
Building of the Day: Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center
The Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center is a new, state-of-the-art medical and graduate education building at Columbia University Medical Center’s campus. is a 100,000-square- foot, 14-story glass tower that incorporates technologically advanced classrooms, collaboration spaces, and a modern simulation center to reflect how medicine is taught, learned, and practiced in the 21st century. The center was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. Diller Scofidio + Renfro is led by Liz Diller AR’79, and Ricardo Scofidio AR’55 and Charles Renfro.

Building of the Day: SeaGlass Carousel

SeaGlass Carousel is an innovative collaboration of art and design. It is located in the Battery in Lower Manhattan. SeaGlass is an aquatic carousel, featuring huge fish rather than the usual horses and chariots. SeaGlass riders sit inside the figures. The scale of the figures, from 6 feet to 13 feet high, adds to the wonder and grandeur of the experience.

Gia Mainiero, AR ’06 gives a guided tour of this facility located at the corner of Spring Street and West Street, this complex includes three district garages for the NYC Department of Sanitation, accommodating over 150 sanitation vehicles, separate vehicle wash and personnel facilities for each district, and centralized fueling and repair facilities.
